Course Description

A non-credit course required of students not meeting the entrance requirements in mathematics. The course covers whole numbers and rational numbers; fundamental operations with whole numbers, fractions and decimals; ratio and proportion; percent; consumer and job-related problems.  Hand-held calculators will be used.

Math Center Requirement

As part of this course, students should avail themselves of further study and/or educational assistance available in the Mathematics Center: B130 and B126. These activities and use of the resources provided are deemed an integral part of the course, and will help the student master necessary knowledge and skills.

Attendance

Class attendance is MANDATORY. If for some reason you miss a class, it is the student’s responsibility to get in touch with the instructor. You are responsible for getting any notes and/or assignments of work that you may have missed.

Makeups

There will be NO makeups of quizzes or exams given. A grade of zero will be given for any quiz or exam missed. If an unforeseen emergency arises, it is your responsibility for contacting me. If a project is due, and you are unable to bring it to class, then the project can be faxed or emailed to the instructor. DO NOT assume that the assignment has been received. You are responsible for contacting me to verify that the project/assignment has been received. Any project handed in after the due date is subject to a grade of zero.

Withdrawal

This course does not allow for a grade of W.

Cheating

Cheating or plagiarizing of any type will not be tolerated. A grade of zero will be given for that exam, quiz or project.

Center for Students with Disabilities

If you have a physical, psychological, medical or learning disability that may impact on your ability to carry out assigned course work, I would urge that you contact the staff in The Center for students with Disabilities, “U” Building (behind the old college union), 572-7241, TTY 572-7617. CSD will review your concerns and determine with you what accommodations are necessary and appropriate. All information and documentation are confidential.

Exams & Grading

In this course, you will receive an “S” (satisfactory) if you complete all requirements or a “U” (unsatisfactory) if you do not complete all requirements.  NOTE:  There is no “W”  or “INC” grade for this course.  If you do not complete the requirements, you will receive a “U”.  Three “U”’s in MAT 002 will result in dismissal from the college.

At the end of the semester, you will take a computerized final.  Your final grade depends on this test and only on this test.  All work done throughout the semester is in preparation for this test and will determine if you get a chance to take this final exit exam and how many times you are able to take this final exit exam.

YOU WILL GET ONE (1) CHANCE AT THE EXIT EXAM IF AND ONLY IF:
• You have no more that six (6) absences during the semester.  There are no ‘excused’ absences.  More than six (6) absences and you will not take the final exit exam which means you will have to repeat the course.

YOU WILL GET AN ADDITIONAL CHANCE AT THE EXIT EXAM IF AND ONLY IF:
• You have a 70% average at the end of the course.  Your average will be comprised of On-line Computerized Chapter Tests, in class quizzes and other assignments.  There are no make-up exams, quizzes or assignments.  You are responsible for all that transpires in class.  If you are absent, you are to contact me, or a friend in the class, immediately, for missed work.
• You have a 60% average and you have less than four (4) absences.

In order to properly prepare each student for the exit exam, there will be a quiz and/or exam given at the end of each week. It will be graded and handed back so that the student and instructor can monitor their progress. There is no college credit given for this course.
