Course Description

This course is designed to acquaint the computer literate student with the interface, hardware, software, and communications protocols necessary to utilize various information systems both local and global. Additional topics addressed include: installation of communications hardware, installation and configuring of communications software, Local Area Networks (LAN), Wide Area Networks (WAN) and global webs, governance and structure of global networks, sites and domains, electronic mail, remote connection, file format and file transfer protocols, electronic resources, navigation of remote domains and networks, societal impact and related issues. Students should be familiar with the PC and have a basic understanding of the operating system.

Computer Center Requirement

As part of this course, students should avail themselves of further study and/or educational assistance available in the Computer Centers located on the first and second floors of building B. The Computer Centers are located in rooms B 225 & B 227. Use of the resources in the Computer Centers is deemed an integral part of the course, and will help the student master necessary knowledge and skills. Admittance to the Computer Center will require a valid NCC identification card.

Attendance

Class attendance is MANDATORY. If for some reason you miss a class, it is the student’s responsibility to get in touch with the instructor. You are responsible for getting any notes and/or assignments of work that you may have missed.

Makeups

There will be NO makeups of quizzes or exams given. A grade of zero will be given for any quiz or exam missed. If an unforseen emergency arises, it is your responsibility for contacting me. If a project is due, and you are unable to bring it to class, then the project can be faxed or emailed to the instructor. DO NOT assume that the assignment has been received. You are responsible for contacting me to verify that the project/assignment has been received. Any project handed in after the due date is subject to a grade of zero.

Withdrawal

A grade of W will not be given out past the official withdrawal date of November 3, 2008.

Cheating

Cheating or plagiarizing of any type will not be tolerated. A grade of zero will be given for that exam, quiz or project.
