Description:
The course covers whole numbers and rational numbers; fundamental operations with
whole numbers, fractions and decimals; ratio and proportion; percent; basic
algebra; consumer and job-related problems.
Required Textbook:
Basic College Mathematics, 8th Edition by Lial, Salzman &
Hestwood, Addison-Wesley, 2010.
Materials Needed:
Students must bring a scientific calculator to class and for exams. The TI-30XS MultiView is recommended.
Math Success Center:
The Math Success Center is located in B109 and offers help in a variety of
ways. Walk-in help, individual and group tutoring, assistance with improving
study skills, homework help, and assistance with math and test anxiety are
available. The Math Center located in B130 offers walk-in help and assistance
with homework and will be open at times when the Math Success Center is not. You
should visit the Math Success Center and the Math Center to obtain brochures
that lists their services and their hours of operation. Use of the resources
provided in the learning centers will help you master necessary knowledge and
skills. NOTE: In order to use the learning centers you must present a valid
NCC identification card.
Extra Help:
A complete learning package accompanies your
text. Among the helpful supplements you
should investigate are:

3. Complete solutions manual
Tests:
The purpose of all quizzes/tests is to prepare you for the final exam. The final exam is a computerized exam given
at the end of the semester. There are no
make-ups for the quizzes/tests.
· A diagnostic pretest is given at the beginning of the course.
· Quizzes are given frequently to provide consistent feedback.
· Tests are given at the end of each chapter.
Grade:
The grades are S (satisfactory) or U (unsatisfactory). To obtain an S you must:

Arriving late or leaving early counts as half an absence.
Withdrawal:
Note that a W and a U carry the same weight, and
any combination of three U’s and W’s in this course will result in dismissal
from NCC. A grade of W is given only to
students who officially withdraw from all of your courses during
the automatic W period.
